Christmas isn't the only great time to send cards. Easter (Resurrection Sunday) & Spring-themed cards are a fun way for your
kids to connect with family, friends, neighbors, and church members! We are sending some of these cards to older friends
living alone and to cheer on our pastors and teachers who are working
extra hard right now. Also, your local nursing home may be accepting
mail for residents or staff! Make your own, or if you'd like to print, color, and send ours, check out the info and links below for our Cards & Envelopes or our Postcards (The artwork is the same. Only the format is different)...

Managing our Kids' Screen Time
The struggle is real, right? When our kids jump on their video games, phones, computers, movies or other devices/screens, our heart cringes a little and we wish they were doing something productive or at least healthy or fun. But while our heart is bugging us, our exhausted brain and body is just happy to have a break from the whining or the noise or the attention.

But as we well know from our own time management issues, a "little while" on a screen very quickly multiplies into a lot of time, and even the most wholesome of content on a screen isn't a healthy or happy way to do life. When screen time takes over, we eventually we see it in our kids' attitudes, discontentment, and health.

If you're like me, you may feel that a line has been crossed, and we can't go back to the good ole days. But we can. It takes a lot of intention, may require creativity, and probably isn't going to go over well at first, but it's possible. So, if you are like us, and feel like screens are taking over your kids' childhood, here is one idea to help us get started reclaiming a healthier balance. It took me ten minutes, index cards, and a marker to create Screen Bucks for my kids (the stickers were just to make them cute :). I have to tell you, when I am faithful to enforce and monitor this plan, it's totally been working! It's simple, but it has so many benefits!

Concept
The concept is simple... Kids EARN screen time by completing projects, chores, responsibilities, or activities that you choose. If they want screen time, they do the task and earn the minutes. They can accumulate minutes during the day to use any time that day. Roll over minutes can be used on the weekend. Of course, we parents always have the prerogative to confiscate bucks, if poor attitudes or behaviors warrant it.

Benefits
In an effort to earn their screen bucks, the kids are spending a lot of time each day doing tasks that are good for them or good for the family. Some tasks help me (dishwasher, laundry, vacuuming). Some tasks help them (typing, piano, reading, act of kindness). Some tasks are just fun (playing outside, crafting, building). But all of them keep them busy in a healthy way!

This shift in how their time is being spent throughout the day has truly affected my kids' overall attitude and contentment level. It has also caused them to be away from screens for a long enough chunk of time that instead of spending their bucks immediately, they often get wrapped up in playing together or get into another activity. Because the kids worked for the screen bucks, they value their screen time more and no longer talk and respond like they are entitled to it. I should also add that the whining and moping around has greatly decreased as a result of this system!

Ideas
Each task can be worth whatever works for you and your family! Most of
our tasks turned out to be worth 15 minutes. For us, this has been a
magic number, because it's enough time to matter but not enough time
satisfy them. So they are motivated to earn more. And every time they
are busy earning bucks, they are.... well,.... busy doing something
worthwhile!

Because we homeschool, getting through a school day with a good work ethic and attitude is HUGE to all of our well beings, so I chose to make having a great school day worth 1 hour of screen time. I also made their morning routine worth 30 minutes, because if they are motivated to get up and ready, then not only will our school day get off to a better start, but they will also have the gumption to do other things in the morning that are not related to screens.

Because we don't allow screen time before the school day ends, my kids have been choosing to get up earlier in the morning to earn bucks, so their bucks will be ready to spend when school is over.

Ready?
Have I convinced you yet? There really is so much to gain and nothing to lose by trying! Stay firm on your end, enforce the plan, and monitor time. I think you'll like the change!Kimberly Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08228194508399960853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223538581976222556.post-86660524362108595832019-10-04T21:36:00.000-05:002020-03-17T17:01:46.503-05:00Make Your Own Miniature Stove
My daughter loves to cook, bake, and experiment in the kitchen. She
also loves to use her imagination and hands to create and invent. On top
of that, she is great at using my phone to make videos/movies. So... it
only stands to reason that she should make a video about a miniature
stove she made! Watch this video, created by Ava, to find out
about the materials she used and to get some tips for how to make and use your own miniature stove for just a couple dollars. Also, below you'll
find some photos of her adorable and tasty tiny food successes!

Meet my mom, Conney - an ever-present part of my growing up and my education. She was
engaged in my public school years, during the 80's, through volunteering
and also taught Sunday School class during several of those years. Then
she homeschooled me (and my brother) from 7th grade through 11th grade.
Her expectations were high for us as she selected challenging course
work and sought out enrichment opportunities.

Somehow, and certainly with the Lord's help, she balanced
it all. She knew when to take the reins and when to step back. She was
aware of what was too much and what was not enough. My mom worked to
make learning fun from cool unit studies and field trips to a decorated
classroom and dress-up days. She also took it so seriously that I do
remember shedding some tears, rigid grading, and a lot of mornings that I
could tell she had been up long into the night.

Her example gives me courage as I raise and educate my own kids. Each
time I feel I'm falling short, I just remember two things... 1) She
wasn't perfect either, even though I think of her that way, and 2) The

Here is a fun craft for autumn or really any time of year! We first made these when my daughter was three years old, and I enjoy making them, too! So, these make a great craft for the whole family and they are also a thoughtful gift idea if you want to add them to your guest's place settings on Thanksgiving!

After following the Salt Dough Clay Recipe, we paint our ornaments and then string them and add beads to make a little hanging decoration which adds a little extra touch of autumn to any decor! These ornaments can be enjoyed for years, so they really can be a decorate keepsake of what your sweet child's hands have created. Read the instructions and tips here and also take a look at all the photos for inspiration!

CLAY (Recipe Below)

2 cups All-purpose Flour

1/2 cup Salt

3/4 cups Water

Bowl

Parchment Paper (optional)

String for hanging

Beads (optional)

SALT DOUGH CLAY RECIPE
Note: Adjust ingredient amounts if you want to make more or less dough. We half this recipe to make about 10 ornaments of our size and thickness.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2 cups All-purpose Flour

1/2 cup Salt

3/4 cups Water

MIX - Knead ingredients together. Keep working it and the dry ingredients will eventually incorporate.

SHAPE - Shape clay with hands or cookie cutters. Use flour on counter to help keep dough from sticking. (We like using parchment paper for making and baking.) Writing on the parchment paper is also an easy way to mark which pieces belong to which child. Note: If the dough begins to dry out from excessive playing, add a tiny bit of water to re-hydrate the dough.

HOLE - Use a toothpick to create a hole (if you plan to hang it).

BAKE - Place on a cookie sheet and bake in oven at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. (Keep an eye on the time, because depending on the size and thickness of your "cookies," the time may need to be increased or decreased. They will begin to become golden on the edges, similar to a cookie, when it's time to take them out of the oven.

DECORATE & STRING - Now you are ready to decorate with acrylic paint and then string with beads, if desired! Glitter paint and metallic paint are fun!

Take care to keep your final creations dry, because water will cause them to become spongy looking. You may also choose to put on a coating of decoupage glue for added protection.

As my oldest child experiences the middle school years, I find myself needing to transition and develop right along with her. One of the ways adjustment is needed is in the area of our daily routine. While a routine provides necessary structure, my child's growing maturity reminds me that it is also time for me to introduce some freedoms. This is the perfect time for me to make adjustments, because she is mature enough to handle some freedom, but she is young enough to be trained in how to manage that freedom.

Giving our children structure and also giving them freedom may sound like an oxymoron, but in actuality, these important but opposite elements, which we the parents measure and determine, can and should work together hand-in-hand.

Why are both important? A structured day is necessary to our child's daily success and sanity, while freedom to make choices and manage time and behaviors is important to experiencing eventual independence and happiness.

Structure

We want our kids to understand how to operate with rules and nonnegotiable expectations because 1) life goes more smoothly for everyone, right? and 2) one day when they further their education and/or experience the work place, they need to know how to do what they are expected to do and work within parameters that have been set by someone else.

Freedom

One of the advantages to homeschooling, which me must also be careful not to abuse, is that our kids have the opportunity to take advantage of their flexible learning environment at home. Freedom can encourage creativity, often fits better with the child's mood (which can also make life go more smoothly for everyone, right?), and may even lead to better productivity when used correctly.

Responsibility

Both structure and freedom are great, but one without the other can become unhealthy. Too much structure can become stifling and frustrating, while too much freedom can encourage laziness and also feel frustrating. So what is the perfect balance? Responsibility. Giving our child responsibility means that they have STRUCTURE through nonnegotiable parameters within which they are expected to operate, but they are given enough FREEDOM and trust within those expectations to accomplish the required goal in a more flexible [and maybe] more creative way. This freedom within structure creates an environment where the child can:

learn time management

discover their strengths and weaknesses

continue moving forward with their studies

experience consequences of their choices

learn to control emotions and attitude

develop interests and ways of learning

work on weaker areas

Obviously, each child is different, and each child has his own level of internal motivation, but we must remember that each child is still developing and needs our guidance to help reach his potential. As parents, we have the opportunity to provide our children with a learning environment that balances structure and freedom in a way that produces healthy responsibility. Learning responsibility will empower them for the rest of their lives.

A Daily Balance

Our days and our families looks different from one another, but to get your mind working on how balance can be achieved during your school day, here are some examples of ways I am working to create a healthy Structure/Freedom balance through responsibility for my middle school student, and it will continue to develop through high school.

These examples help explain why both structure and freedom are necessary. If I gave my child complete freedom to do her school work whenever and wherever she
wanted, her education would be a disaster. Even if she had the
will-power and maturity to tackle all her work and do it well, she would
have missed out on the lighter anxiety level that comes from practicing
obedience and routine. And if we were so structured that I never gave my child any
flexibility or choice, then the rejection of her reasonable requests
would quench her growing independence and inner desire to be affirmed
and trusted when deserved.

Honest Assessment

If you are struggling with balance of structure and freedom in your school day or your home, consider that during the middle school years (roughly), structure must not be
abandoned, and if it has not already been present, it should be
instituted. Also, during these years, freedom given with responsibility should
be introduced, and the child should be trained through parental example
and guidance in wisely using freedom as it is permitted and earned.

I hope this post helps us re-assess the level of balance between structure and freedom that we are providing for each of our children. We can embrace the word "responsibility" and pursue healthy development as our children brave the sometimes turbulent waters from dependence to independence.Kimberly Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08228194508399960853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223538581976222556.post-62300406752510823602019-08-12T17:35:00.004-05:002020-03-17T17:01:46.341-05:00Branches of Government
We are using quite a bit of BJU Press' Distance Learning Online program this year, and one thing that I'm loving is that it is freeing up my time to do the fun, creative teaching that my heart wanted to do in previous years, but my energy-level just couldn't deliver before. Here is one example of what I mean...

The Three Branches of Government were introduced and well-explained in our BJU Heritage Studies course. The worksheet was great, as well, but there is still no way my children are going to remember the three branches of government without reviewing it frequently. How can they review in a fast, flexible, and re-usable way? Ta-da!... our Build & Remember Puzzle Chart!
During our homeschooling journey from kindergarten through now middle school, my kids have always thrived on two elements of scheduling.

1) The Day's Expectations: My kids like knowing at the beginning of the day what is going to happen or what is expected of them. Seeing the plan helps them realize that their school work will eventually end.

2) Completed Work Recognized: My kids are more motivated during the school day when they can see their progress and feel that they have accomplished something.

The way I accomplish this has changed over the years, but some form of it is always a success. Let me show you what I did for the younger grades and then what I'm doing for the older elementary and middle school years, and then adapt these ideas to work for your family!

School Day Progress Tracking for Lower Elementary Students

This system is so simple, but it was just right for us. I put it together very quickly, and then it was reusable day after day! There are a number of ways you can write the subjects (I used cutouts from Dollar Tree) or pin up the pockets, but you see the main idea here. At the beginning of the day, in each child's clear pocket (made from a clear sheet protector), I placed all of the subjects that student would be tackling that day. I usually kept them in order of our routine from front to back. This way the student could always see which subject was coming up. When the subject was completed, they pulled that subject card out of the pocket and placed it in their "Completed" pocket/envelope. This gave them a helpful visual throughout the school day of their progress. And for the next school day, I just popped the subject cards right back in the clear pocket.

School Day Progress Tracking for Upper Elementary & Middle School Students

I created this chart on the computer with the subjects in order of our routine. I could add times, but I've found that they are more focused when they aren't looking at the clock. We are doing a combination of parent-led curricula and BJU's Distance Learning Online program, so in the case of our charts this year, I often put the Day Number in the blank, and that is enough info to keep my student on track for that subject. For other subjects, the Lesson Number is often enough to keep them on track, and sometimes I just write in what I want them to do. For us, it's working as a completely structured and a completely flexible system. When they complete a subject, my kids put on a sticker or color in the box. I only plan a week at a time, because it's just enough to keep me accountable and allow me to adjust if needed without frustration. At the end of the week, I print them each a new chart and I get busy planning.

My son is learning about ecosystems in the first chapter of BJU Science 4, and it's been a fun study for him. He was, however, having a little trouble straightening out the different terms in his mind. To help him remember the terms and their meanings as well as better understand how it all works together, I got out my trusty markers, cardstock, and scissors to create 1) a Chart that helps him get the big idea and 2) Manipulative Pieces so he could "build" his own ecosystem.

Maybe you can use this idea. If so, don't worry if the drawings aren't perfect or the paper isn't nice. Maybe this would be a good activity to give the student to draw on their own. The point is to visually arrange information and manipulate it in a way that encourages discussion, thinking, understanding, and remembering!

Ecosystem Chart

I know - I should have had him write the information instead of me doing it, but we were very pressed for time, and I just did it myself. He did, however, find the info in the textbook and tell me what to write, and he arranged and glued the pieces into their correct places. The photos we added came from an online image search for "different ecosystems" which I just printed and cut out. Now we have a nice display to help him recall what he has learned.

Manipulative Ecosystems

There could have been so many more pieces to this and several more animal options, but this is the extent of what I managed to crank out before bed one night. I made sure I had several different pieces that represented parts of the environment, resources, and a selection of organisms to not only give him choices, but also to give us an opportunity to discuss why a particular organism may or may not be able to live in the environment he had built. This really helped solidify the difference between all the terms and he enjoyed rebuilding his paper ecosystem to support different living things. When we finished discussing and manipulating the pieces, we did not glue them down; I dropped all the pieces into a clear sleeve protector and set them aside for him to get out another time.

I'm thinking he's ready for his quiz! :)Kimberly Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08228194508399960853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223538581976222556.post-50123999101817744362019-07-16T18:24:00.001-05:002020-03-17T17:01:46.279-05:00Functional Artwork

Until we moved to our current house, our classroom was located in a separate room of the house where we could decorate and learn and make messes during our school time, and then when school was over, we simply shut the door and lived peacefully (okay, happily) in the rest of the house. When company came, they never had to see our classroom unless I wanted them to see it. It was the ideal setup for me. When we moved, however, the houses we considered did not have an extra "hidden" space where we could spend our school time. Quite the opposite, actually. If you visit our house, our classroom is the first room you'll see, and you will definitely see it, because it is located at the front door and is completely open to the rest of the house. I wasn't sure I'd like that arrangement, but it has turned out great. I finally came to terms with the fact that school is "what we do," and as my husband said, "Our house is for us, and it should work for us, not the occasional visitor."
Designed to be a sitting room, it is now 100% our classroom and my office space. It works best for our family to schedule school time and have a location that is conducive to learning and not being distracted, so as a result, we spend almost all of our [very long] school days time in that room and sometimes in the dining room. Because we can't simply close it off in the evenings or on weekends or when company comes, it's important to me that it is neat and clean and attractive and that it doesn't scream primary colors and messy projects. That's just me. If I get to come to your house, I'm not judging! (For the record, our room does not always look this clean. Usually, it's a downright disaster!)
We do have and enjoy using a marker board, but for this very open room, I opted to trade out our bulletin boards and hanging chart pockets for more attractive and homey metal artwork. With my favorite heavy-duty magnet clips from the hardware aisle, which can hold a lot of weight, I simply put up any charts, maps, or artwork that I want to use for teaching, learning, or celebrating. It's perfect, because when I'm sick of it, don't want it up anymore, or want to change it out, it's a breeze!

Know the Law and Follow It
As homeschoolers, should we follow the law? Absolutely. If you are unsure about the laws for homeschoolers in your state, a great starting place is to find the website for your state-wide homeschool group (Note that "State Homeschool Group" is referring to the location of the state, not to the government). You can also click on your state on HSLDA's map to find out the homeschooling laws in your state.

Info Requested by Your County or State
Now that we have that settled and none of us are going to be penalized, fined, or put in jail :), let's talk about those letters and forms that the school district may send out periodically to some of us. They may ask things like if you have a college degree, what the exact dates are that you will be in school, if your child has learning disabilities, or what specific topics will be covered in each subject. They may request that you fill out a form about your family or educational choices. If this info is not required by law, don't answer. Don't disclose any information beyond what you are required by law to disclose. And I'll tell you why...

Changed Perspective
At first, you may be thinking, "If I am obliging, courteous, and give them the info they want, then they will see that homeschoolers are responsible, honest, educated people who aren't the enemy." That's a nice thought, and some secretary in some office may have that thought as they file away your personal info in the cabinet. But what you are saying more loudly is, "I am happy to give you the data you need to attack homeschooling in the courtroom, and I want the system to feel like it has the right to dig into my choices and my rights as much as they like." Doesn't sound so good anymore, right? This sounds extreme, but the more they can get, the more they will want, and that can seriously and negatively affect other homeschool families and laws in your school district, state, or even nation-wide.

A Real Life Example
One year my family received a letter and a form in the mail from our school district which stated, "I have received your letter of intent to homeschool for the school year. I do need you to complete and return the demographic information sheet enclosed."

I emailed our state homeschool group, and received this response:

Thank you so much for thinking of the impact to other homeschoolers! Personally, I would ignore the request. You are not required to complete any further county forms. If you are contacted further, then I would respond in writing that you have complied with the law.

I am not aware that your county has been a problem in the past, but unfortunately, that could be because others before you have complied with their request... Even though you are completely correct in your actions, that may not preclude the county from trying to cause a problem and try to bully you into complying.

So How Can We Respond?
The next time the government
or the school district requests info beyond the law, consider not
answering at all. At the most, you could reply, "I have already complied with the law, so I respectfully choose not to respond." You have the right to protect your
choices and your family. You are a responsible, law-abiding citizen, and
just because someone asks, doesn't mean you have to answer.

If
or when this happens to you, immediately notify your state homeschool
group to let them know what's going on. They may be able to alert others
in your local area or state-wide, as the situation may require, and to
step in when the state or school system is crossing the line. To learn
more about the legal battle to protect our homeschooling rights and how
you can take action to be individually defended, visit www.HSLDA.com or look up other organizations who are working hard to defend every parent's right to educate their children.Kimberly Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08228194508399960853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223538581976222556.post-42536178679311353492019-06-29T01:08:00.000-05:002020-03-17T17:01:46.226-05:00PRINTABLE Tracker for Instructional Days

Most states require homeschool students to study for a certain number of
instructional days. For 30 of the states, that number of days is 180, but the number of days for the rest of the states varies between a little under 170 to 181 days, and in a few states, the regulation doesn't apply at all. Respecting this law is important, because breaking it can mean penalties, fines, or sentences.

Fortunately, tracking our number of school days is much easier than actually getting through them, right? While I do use a planner/calendar to keep track of our daily and monthly responsibilities, I prefer to keep our number of instructional days on a separate paper that I can easily slip into my "Master Binder" at the end of the year. My "Master Binder," as I refer to it, is where I keep important and legal documentation related to our home school.

Do you need an easy way to track (or plan) your number of school days? You can save (right-click) and then print the free image/file above!

Because the sheet does not include specific dates, you can print it off again each year to mark your days.

Lines at the bottom allow for tallying each month.

July is included on both ends for the purpose of schedule flexibility.

Raise your hand if you remember Trapper-Keepers, lots of spiral notebooks, and cardboard pencil boxes from your school days. Anything I could do to personalize these school materials and put my own stamp on them, I did. In first grade, I went so far as to ask my mom to cover my pencil box in pretty wrapping paper so it would look different from everyone else's on the planet. I guess that need to turn the boring, mass-produced product into my own creative masterpiece still lingers. because here I am as an adult teaching my own kids, and I'm still doing the same thing! I love it when we turn the boring cover of their binder or notebook into something they want to see every day.

Personalizing with Paper

I enjoy letting the kids pick out decorative paper and crafty accessories, glue it on (we like brushing on decoupage glue), and add their names. Shhh... I must admit that while I smile on creativity, I'm also an organized perfectionist, so I'm usually steering them toward a "neat and tidy" version of creativity. I should probably loosen up a bit in that department. Maybe I'll work on that this year.

Personalizing with Fabric
While some school materials only last for the year, others may be around for several years. For example, my kids are going through the Spell to Write and Read course, and part of the program involves starting a new composition/log book each year. While it's a new book, each year's book has the same dimensions, so this year while I had my sewing machine out around Christmas, I made re-usable fabric covers for these books to make my kids' work inside feel important and personalized. They selected their favorite fabric, and I did the work. Next year, we can simply slip new books inside and move on. Another good time to make a fabric cover/jacket is when you buy that used book that was listed as "like new" only to discover when it arrives that it should have been described as being in fair condition. Don't you hate it when that happens?

If sewing isn't your thing or you don't have the time, fabric is still
fun to cut and glue on for a neat look and soft finish. You can't re-use
it, but it's a nice texture change from paper. It can also be a fresh
way to use that adorable shirt your child outgrew.
Matching Magnetic Bookmarks
Whether using paper or fabric, you can create a matching bookmark by gluing it to two thin magnets (like those you get in the mail from your insurance company) cut to equal sizes so it will fold over the page.

Welcome to The Snack Shop, where my kids get in some practical
money-math and walk away with a snack for later. Some morning, we open The
Snack Shop before the school day kicks off. After I have
chosen the snack options and the prices (so they will be forced to work
with change), the kids use play money and their cash register to take
turns buying a snack. So this activity gives them practice with
money-math, and it also gives them a snack that they don't complain
about (because they chose it). If you don't have a play cash register or play money, no problem! Your kids can use a little bit of real cash and change and have a notepad and paper handy, in case they need it.
When our oldest was getting ready to start kindergarten, my mom made a wonderful suggestion! She recommended getting journals for our kids that they could keep into adulthood, and these journals would be for recording the books they read. So I selected classic journals for them, and we have been keeping them ever since.Kimberly Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08228194508399960853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223538581976222556.post-39291795546366392552019-06-03T08:58:00.000-05:002020-03-17T17:01:46.201-05:00GROWING & LEARNING TOGETHER

Sometimes it can be difficult for eager preschool aged children to enjoy family game time, because they can't yet read. One way we found to include our little ones was to create Picture Charade Cards. We found pictures of animals in old magazines, cut them out, and and glued them to index cards. But the pictures don't have to be of animals and you may find it easier to find them online, print, and cut them out. You could also write the word on the card to encourage word recognition, but the picture itself is what makes it possible for the child to get to independently
participate by acting it out.

Now everyone can play, whether they are able to read or not. If you are playing a game that is too mature for your little one, just pull out the stack of cards, and let that child draw one and act it out for their turn. That way they get to be part of the fun, too, without sacrificing the rules of the selected game. Have fun!

Fun and tasty! We make these Resurrection Rolls almost every Easter as a reminder of Jesus' death and resurrection. This year, we made them while my mom and dad were visiting. The rolls represent the tomb (which will be hollow/empty after they have baked) and the ingredients tie into the Bible. This is a great activity for the family or a ministry program.

First, Landon and I set out all the ingredients and called everyone to the table. Next, I demonstrated each step and explained how the ingredient reflected the Biblical account. Then everyone made their roll assembly-line-style, and we placed them in the oven. While they were baking, we listened to a favorite song about Jesus being a live. When the rolls were done and and still warm, we broke open our rolls and shouted "Jesus is alive!"

Marshmallows (original size) -

Butter (melted)

Directions:

Take one Marshmallow - it represents Jesusโ body after the crucifixion.

Roll marshmallow in Melted Butter - the butter represents the oil for his burial.

Roll buttered marshmallow in Sugar and in Cinnamon - these ingredients represent the spices for his burial.

Wrap in a Crescent Roll, being sure to seal around the marshmallow - the dough represents the tomb and closing it well reminds us that the soldiers guarded the tomb.

For Veteran's Day, we baked cookies, placed them in sealed plastic sandwich bags, and then added our own note/drawing of thanks to construction paper which we folded over and stapled to the top of the cookie bags. These are a terrific and heart-felt way to thank the vets who attend our church. The same idea can be applied to so many other occasions and needs, as well!
A little autumn inspiration for you, and a little autumn love for the recipients of our cards.

Kimberly Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08228194508399960853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223538581976222556.post-26508477254635856972013-04-18T21:10:00.000-05:002020-03-17T17:01:46.133-05:00Original Paintings by Us and for Us

We just redecorated Ava and Landon's bedroom, and part of the plan was for them to have their own original artwork on the walls. So, yay for 50% off canvas' at the craft store, 67 cent bottles of paint, 1 inch sponge brushes, and a pencil. These 20x20 pieces of artwork ended up costing us about $10 each and roughly 2 hours each. We are so happy with the results!

The kids each chose their own subject matter and we selected paint colors that would match their bedding. When it was all said and done, I did want it to look good with their room.

Landon is 3, so I drew the train and did most of the painting, but he did do the selections of color and did some painting in the larger areas.

Ava is 5, and she did the painting. I just drew the butterfly for her.

I decided to add an additional piece to Ava and Landon' room. The tree. It has a simplistic version of their family tree (going back to their great-great-grandparents) on it. My husband's side of the tree isn't complete yet, because I'm in the process of confirming some names with my mother-in-law, but soon it will be complete!

If you want to create your own original artwork, but you and/or your children aren't very artistic, remembering to only use colors that are in the room, will help you out - a lot! Also, if you are wanting to do something more than stripes or color blocks, you can search Google Images for "_______ drawing" and you'll probably find some inspiration that you can recreate with pencil onto the canvas before painting.

Happy painting!Kimberly Farmerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08228194508399960853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-223538581976222556.post-42082641777723506962013-03-07T17:43:00.000-06:002020-03-17T17:01:46.222-05:00From Box to BasketWe needed a quick, affordable, thoughtful way to give our neighbor some Easter candy and share the message of Jesus - and we came up with this! An empty graham cracker box almost made it to the trash before we rescued it and turned it into a handsome, sturdy basket.

It's perfect for tossing in some candy, eggs, money, or any other little gift. It would also be a cute way to present a small Mother's Day gift.

Just follow the photos below, and I believe you'll get the idea of how we did it!
Decorate a glass jar with Glass Permanent Paint Pens (or in our case we used Elmer's Paint Markers), and fill them up with a treat for someone dear. Pretty cute.
